Conversation with an IITian

SAVAI EDUCATION [ www.savai.co.in ] had a conversation with Mr. Vaibhav Verma (IIT Bombay 1st Year student)

Mr. Vaibhav graciously answered many queries that students had regarding JEE Preparation. Here is a summary of the session.

Queries by 12th/Dropper Students

[Q1] Main is around the corner, then boards, then advanced. Could you walk us through your revision strategies for mains as well as advanced?

[A1] Do a lot of mock tests, analyze your mistakes and do not repeat them in the next mock tests. Start fixing your sleep schedule to match the exam timings. Try not to fall sick during this time so you should eat healthy, try to stay fit and mentally calm.

[Q2] I'm getting low marks in the coaching mock test, how do I stay motivated?

[A2] Don’t get stressed about coaching mock tests. A lot of coachings set unnecessarily tough papers. There is also a competition among coachings to set the toughest paper. You should try to solve previous year JEE MAIN and ADVANCED papers to see if your preparation is up to the mark. If you are able to solve previous year papers within the actual exam time limit, your preparation is good enough.

[Q3] How to handle nervousness during exams? I know a lot but cannot do well!

[A3] Some amount of nervousness is natural. You have to keep faith in yourself. Remember all the hours you have studied and you will realize that you are well prepared for the exam. Make a small note that says “I will not make silly mistakes in the exam”. Stick this to your study table and repeat it every time you sit down for study or take a mock test. This will help you.

[Q4] Any specific strategy for Phy/Chem/Math?

[A4] Keep in mind that the level of Physics in JEE MAIN has been very easy for the past couple of years. So try to make a list of all formulae and try to remember them by heart because mostly formula based questions are being asked. Read NCERT for Physics at least once before the exam because direct questions are being asked.

For chemistry, the level is also fairly easy so don’t skip NCERT.

Maths, the level in both JEE MAIN and ADV. is tough and a lot of students face issues. The best advice is to try PYQs and analyze them.

Queries by 11th Students

[Q5] Which books did you use for your JEE Prep?

[A5]

Phy:

  • BM Sharma (Cengage)

  • Irodov

Chem:

  •  Inorganic:PMS Sir's Book or VK Jaiswal

  •  Organic:Advanced problems in Organic Chemistry by MS Chauhan

  •  Physical:N. Awasthi

Math:

  • Cengage or Arihant set of books

  • Black Book (Vikas Gupta sir)

If you are enrolled in a coaching then the coaching modules and pyq's must be the priority and then you can jump to the books

[Q6] What was your typical day while you were preparing for JEE?

[A6] I liked studying a lot so I did not keep count. Typically after coaching and school, you have to do 6 hours of self study daily on average to crack IIT.

[Q7] I have wasted my 11th class, can i still make it? How?

[A7] A lot of my friends at IIT B have this story. They wasted 11th but were able to make it to IIT. Keep in mind, you are not at ZERO, you must have studied something in coaching or for school exams. The first step is to ask yourself if you are truly serious about cracking this exam. If yes, then it is possible. You have to put in some extra effort since your 11th is not strong. First of all, don’t skip chapters going on in class 12th to cover the 11th backlog. Devote maximum time to 12th topics but take out 1-2 hours on average daily to do 11th topics and this way you can cover the course.

[Q8] How to cope with demotivation and stress?

[A8] Even I had these thoughts when I started, I was also exploring other options apart from JEE. I had a lot of stressful days. You can have stress because of backlog, poor mock test marks etc. The trick is to not overthink. Take action and don’t think too much about success or failure. Whenever you feel stress or self doubt, just sit down to study and study for one or two hours. Once you study for two hours you will feel good and realize that IIT is achievable as you were able to understand the theory and solved some questions at JEE level in the past two hours. Or you can talk to good mentors like Aniket Sir ( www.savai.co.in ) who will guide you in the right direction.
